Somewhere in the outskirts of what was once the Ganadon Kingdom, an odd assortment of surgecallers sat on a circle of rocks facing a small fire in a damp cave.

‘So…’ Jamison’s gaze flicked up to Alak. ‘You’re… on our side, now?’

Alak grunted.

‘Just like that?’

Alak grunted again.

Huon supposed he was getting used to the rapid shift in the Immortal Seven once they were free from their bonds. He could hardly believe that all of them were either freed or… dead. Five freed. Two dead. He supposed it could have been far worse.

Those five Immortals were fighting for him now, though that didn’t mean he shouldn’t be wary of them.

Huon turned to Rai. ‘You said you knew where the Everlasting King would be?’

‘Do we have another name to call ‘im?’ Garl muttered. ‘I don’t like calling that evil bastard a king.’

A muscle in Alak’s neck twitched, his jaw tightening.

A thousand years of being commanded to think of the king as a saviour…

The same thing didn’t happen to Rai, however. She didn’t appear phased by Garl’s words in the slightest. ‘I do not know his true name, only the title he has gone by,’ Rai said.

Alak said nothing.

Rai turned to Huon. ‘Before I tell you where he will be, we need to ensure you can do what needs to be done.’

Enter his mind. Pull the information of the cores straight from his memories. ‘I don’t know if I’ll be able to get close enough.’

Jamison cleared his throat. Every gaze in the cave turned to him. He hesitated, then spoke. Apparently he was feeling nervous surrounded by two Immortals. Or maybe it was Huon he was nervous around. ‘Will… will he know your bonds were cut?’ His gaze moved between the two Immortals.

‘He will. The bonds of their Honourbound will have been cut too, as yours have.’ Huon bit the inside of his cheek before he could stop himself. That means all the Honourbound will be freed… Huon hadn’t thought about the consequences of his actions as he freed the Immortals of their oath bindings, he had simply been taking each moment as it came.

The others all seemed to catch up on this at the same time as it hit him. ‘So that means no one’s under his control?’ Garl’s eyebrows rose to the top of his large forehead.

‘The entire Honourbound army have just been… freed?’ Jamison muttered. ‘It’s going to be chaos back there.’

Have I just doomed the army to suffer the Everlasting King’s wrath? Will he pulverise the area in an explosion of power like he did Glenhaven? Huon swallowed, worry at his actions filling him. This was not the plan…

‘He won’t know.’ Rai folded her hands in her lap. Her trident rested against the cave wall not far behind her. ‘He won’t be returning to the army until we’re ready to launch the fleet.’

Alak leant forward, elbows resting on knees, fingers interlocked. ‘Dawn. Tomorrow.’

Huon’s mind raced. Jamison was right. The entire army would be in total disarray. All because of me. He had intended to free the Immortal Seven.
